Meeting Transcription: Brainstorming the Brainstorm
How can meeting transcription help you optimize your brainstorming sessions?
Before the storm
You’ve scheduled a brainstorming meeting to generate ideas for your next project. Your goal is to generate copious quantities of ideas, because that’s the route to better ideas.
How can you lay the groundwork for abundance?
Use earlier transcripts to generate questions
If you have used meeting transcription before, review earlier transcripts on the topic at hand, peruse your transcripts to generate the most apt topics for your current meeting. The more specific you can be in your phrasing, the more stimulating your prompts can be.
How can trancribing the meeting help with group dynamics?
Transcription services have transcribers who are trained to identify speakers in a group situation, and can provide the name of each speaker along with what each person said. If you are supplied with transcripts of previous meetings where the speakers are named, a good facilitator can identify conversational dynamics, intervene helpfully to redirect ineffective patterns, and even choose groups of people who work especially well together in the brainstorm format.
Make it playful
Choose a friendly, quiet room. Provide coffee, food, and doodling paper. Bring toys! Having things to fiddle with quietly, like Lego or magnet toys, and markers and paper, will free up thinking.
Brainwrite
Begin initial ‘storming’ in writing. Studies have shown that this helps to generate more original ideas, and allows greater participation by more minds. (In a group discussion sometimes the dominant speakers will shape the conversation, and the ideas of quieter people may never see the light.)
Brainwrite to Brainstorm
With the list of topics generated in writing, you can schedule brainstorming meetings on each one. More meetings, more ideas! And please don’t forget to transcribe the meetings.
